Classics Need Reform?
Proliferating Demands on Graduate Students Stemming from
Challenges Faced by the Profession
Eric Casey voiced concern that, despite increasing pressure to
shorten the time to degree in all graduate programs, students were
being asked to spend time on more and more different types of
things (e.g. on teaching and research; on philology and related
classical disciplines; on classics and outside fields (comparative
literature, women's studies, etc.). Bridget Murnaghan agreed that
this was a problem, particularly given the increasing pressure on
graduate programs to shorten time to degree, the general scarcity
of funding, and the fact that it has become impossible to assume
that entering graduate students will on the whole have similar
backgrounds, interests, or needs.
