A Woman's World: Internations Fiction, Film, and Theory
Description:
In this course we will survey written and cinematic productions by women
from a variety of
geographical and cultural zones
that will inform, complicate, and perhaps challenge our ideas
about gender, sexuality, and
selfhood. Works will include Anchee Min's powerful memoir Red
Azalea, Silences of the
Palace-Moufida Tlatli's moving exploration of memory and motherhood,
and Deepa Mehta's controversial
film Fire, which was banned in India. The inclusion of
theoretical
essays in our syllabus will help
deepen our understanding and appreciation of such literary and
filmic works.
