A book-length study tentatively entitled ÒAuthors, Scholars, and the
Making of
Classics,Ó which
will explore how the rhetoric of classicism in ancient authors helps to determine
what sorts of literature modern readers deem worthy of classic status, and how
such judgments condition our understanding of ancient Greek and Latin literature
in general, including those works that occupy a marginal position
within the classical canon.
