What is DIC

1. Background

The advancement of the information technology and the dissemination of the Internet has led the digital factor in the corporate activities to emerge as the key to industrial competitiveness around the globe.

Even though the national, regional, agricultural and industrial complexes are the key
strongholds for both the national and regional economies, their activities still remain at the
analog state. The introduction of e-businesses is vital in this digital age.

- Should this trend continue, the small and medium sized companies in the local areas are
bound to lag further behind in the competition in the digital era.

- There is concern that such trend of local areas lagging behind will become the obstacle for
balanced development of the regional economy and expansion of e-commerce on the
  national level.

In order to accelerate the digital trend in the industrial complexes, the Ministry of Industry
and Resources has launched the pilot project for Digital Industrial Complex beginning
with the Ansan area (Banwol / Sihwa Industrial Complex) in May of 2001 and for activating
the e-commerce transaction by small and medium-sized companies in 2002.
