Voluntary Confession about Things

Amy Wright

i.

Writing poetry is a gesture.

The poet watches himself
while biting a lemon.

Or, the photograph
of that gesture
upon making it.

ii.

"Begin ephebe by perceiving the idea
Of this invention, this invented world"
                      -Wallace Stevens

First study pre-creation
in each of its continuums

like a fleck of sand
in the motions of water

Or revolution
before axis.

The photograph of a lemon
awaiting crossections.

iii.

Underneath the sand
a blue tennis shoe
is unlaced.

The gesture:
a spoon
filled with gold and lead
balanced and swaying on a steel rod.
