Refugees and Migration in Historical Perspective - Fall 2017

This five-lecture offers a long view at refugees and immigrants in the eastern Mediterranean region, aiming to develop an understanding of conditions and experiences of refugees and migration today. The series meets on Mondays at 7:00 pm at the Madison Connector 105 (Civic Hall), Camden County College Civic Center, Blackwood Campus, Blackwood NJ.  Lectures are free and open to the public.

The program is cosponsored by the American Research Institute in Turkey, the University of Pennsylvania Middle East Center, and hosted by the Camden County College Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility.  The series offers professional education credits to teachers in NJ and PA. October 2:  Displacement and Migration in the Eastern Mediterranean during the 19th/20th Century

Professor Chris Gratien, University of Virginia, examines why the history of the Ottoman Empire is critical to understanding the history of global migration and politics surrounding immigration and refuges in the US, Europe, and beyond.

October 16:  International and National Refugee Law and Policy

Professor Ahmet İçduygu, Koç University Migration Research Center, provides an overview of immigrant and refugee law and policy and an overview of the lives of refugees now pouring into Turkey.

October 30:  Fleeing Inquisition:  European Refugees in 18th Century Istanbul

Professor Professor Harun Küçük, University of Pennsylvania, examines how scholars, craftsmen, and prisoners of war integrated themselves into urban life in Istanbul during the time of the Ottoman Empire.
