This five-lecture offers a long view at refugees and immigrants in the eastern Mediterranean region, aiming to develop an understanding of conditions and experiences of refugees and migration today. The series meets on Mondays at 7:00 pm at the Madison Connector 105 (Civic Hall), Camden County College Civic Center, Blackwood Campus, Blackwood NJ. Lectures are free and open to the public.
The program is cosponsored by the American Research Institute in Turkey, the University of Pennsylvania Middle East Center, and hosted by the Camden County College Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility. Professor Chris Gratien, University of Virginia, examines why the history of the Ottoman Empire is critical to understanding the history of global migration and politics surrounding immigration and refuges in the US, Europe, and beyond.

Professor Ahmet İçduygu, Koç University Migration Research Center, provides an overview of immigrant and refugee law and policy and an overview of the lives of refugees now pouring into Turkey.

Professor Professor Harun Küçük, University of Pennsylvania, examines how scholars, craftsmen, and prisoners of war integrated themselves into urban life in Istanbul during the time of the Ottoman Empire.
