With the title of this photograph (“Public health doctor giving
tenant family medicine for malaria, near Columbia, South Carolina”),
Wolcott has given us some crucial information: she tells us that the family
pictured are tenant farmers, that the man pictured is a public health
physician, that what he is giving the woman of the family is medicine
for malaria, and that this family lives “near Columbia, South Carolina”-not
in a city, but not far from one.
