In
the final part of this section, we provide you with a collection of images,
documents, and other items that offer insight Americans image, expectations,
and experience of medicine in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. We have also
provided essential facts about those items telling you who created them
and when.
Examine these documents,
and then use them to write a short essay (to be submitted to your instructor
off-line) responding to the following questions:
What did Americans expect from medicine in the middle third
of this century? What relationship did the popular images of medicine
they encountered and their own experiences with the health care system
have to these expectations?
