Many popular works published during American medicine's "golden age," such as Arthur Hertzler’s The Horse-and-Buggy Doctor (1938), celebrated the accomplishments and manner of physicians trained in an earlier era. Some observers and policymakers, however, located part of the responsibility for rural health problems with the rural physician.
