Provisional List of Papyri in the University Museum

An index with more detailed notes (and description of identification procedures) for each language group is in process; the Coptic [about 595 items] was begun on 28de2009; the Arabic [about 216 items] on 06ja2010, and the Greek [over 700 items] on 15ja2010. On 10au2010 starts were made on lists for Hebrew/Aramaic [28 items] Latin [only one text, at 16694], Pahlavi [at least 30 items], Demotic [over 200 items], Hieroglyphic [about 20 items], Hieratic [about 40 items], "unidentified" (including pseudo-writing [over 13 items] , and "other" (for pictures/designs [about 12, excluding those clearly associated with text], book covers and the like). The total number of items (many of which consist of multiple fragments) is around 1855, plus hundreds of unplaced smaller pieces. Only further detailed research can provide more accurate counts of the number of separate documents represented.

[see also the separate Coptic list by Hubler and Wright, and the separate Hebrew list]

Bold type indicates that the scanned image is available at the official University Library SCETI site (in process, but temporarily suspended 13 January 2009); most other image links are "unofficial," from digital images taken by R.A.Kraft for research purposes, with permission of the Egyptology section, starting in Fall 2008 (some are from photographs by Jean Walker of the Egyptology staff). Where available, digital image numbers have been included to facilitate locating the raw images from which edited and/or composite forms [indicated by *] have been created. [latest update 13 Sept 2010]

The location of almost all these "manuscript" items in the Museum is the papyrus room "B37" and unless otherwise noted, each accession number relates to a single item. Where multiple fragments that are not shown to be from the same document are covered by a single number, relatively larger [approximately 5 square centimeters or more] pieces are counted first, then the relatively smaller (thus "10 + 6" indicates ten larger and six smaller pieces under that Museum number). Most pieces are located in the cabinet with five rows of drawers pictured here.

  Greek (7)

#1 cartonnage, large column, word division [*7735-36]

#2 parts of 4+ Greek lines, upper left corner -- / some ink marks || [*7751-52]

#3 parts of 3 Greek lines (and end of previous col.) -- / blank || [*]

    ##4-7 small Greek pieces [*]

  Coptic (9+) [*7747-50]

  Arabic (5)

#3 parts of vellum codex bifold (Qur'an?) [7727-28]

#5 large vellum codex page, some gold lettering (Qur'an?) [7743-44]

covers (with leather, fabric, and paper inscribed with Arabic and Coptic)

It is not clear if or how these very similar pieces relate to each other (possibly those imaged on the left are from the same codex, or perhaps from individual covers filled with paper), or whether the top right piece in the image is part of the others; Arabic writing is evident in some of the preserved paper (the second item from the top on the left was adhering to the top left item -- note the blotting effect), and possibly also Coptic; the outer construction consists of leather over fabric (burlap?). [7721-22, 7733-34, 7737-40]

  blank (1) [7731-32]
