One question we can ask is which experiences were frequently documented in photographs, and why these experiences were documented.

Just as immunization was portrayed in art and the use of "wonder drugs" was described in the popular press, the administration of immunizations, antibiotics, and other pharmaceuticals was frequently featured in mid-century photographs. Here children in Georgia line up to be immunized, probably against diphtheria or smallpox. After many health campaigns in the 1920s and 1930s, immunization against preventable disease had become both relatively commonplace and symbolic of the accomplishments of modern medicine, whether publicly or privately delivered.
