to Health This illustration appeared in a booklet distributed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company at the New York and San Francisco fairs. The Metropolitan and other insurance companies gathered data about causes of death and rates of sickness and thus helped illustrate the changing patterns of mortality and morbidity that were evident by mid-century.
