"Textualizing the World Afresh:
The Place of Scriptures in the Latin
Church from Augustine to Cassiodorus"
James J. O'Donnell, The University of Pennsylvania
2 April, 1998
This meeting
will be held on Thursday, 2 April, from 7-9 pm in the Second Floor Lounge
of Logan Hall at the University of Pennsylvania.
Persons wishing to dine with other participants prior to the meeting
should meet at 6 pm at Logan Hall. We normally eat
at the Food Court in the building at 3401 Walnut Street, although any
change of plans will be posted in a note on the outer door to Logan./p
Readings
Prof. O'Donnell offers the following suggestions for those who wish to
prepare for the presentation.
They could refresh their memory of Augustine's De Doctrina
Christiana. (Here are a translation,
selections,
and O'Donnell's
introduction to it
from his book on Augustine).
Those unfamiliar with Cassiodorus, may find this chapter
of O'Donnell's book on
Cassiodorus useful.
Finally, this previous essay
can serve as a point of departure and (likely) also debate about earlier
authors saying the same thing./p
