Provisional List of Papyri in the University Museum

[see also the separate Coptic list by Hubler and Wright, and the separate Hebrew list]

Bold type indicates that the scanned image is available at the official SCETI site (in process 13 January 2009); most other image links are "unofficial," from digital images taken by R.A.Kraft for research purposes, with permission of the Egyptology section, starting in Fall 2008 (some are from photographs by Jean Walker of the Egyptology staff). [latest update 29 October 2009]

The location of almost all these "manuscript" items in the Museum is the papyrus room "B37" and unless otherwise noted, each accession number relates to a single item.

Scholars and researchers who have viewed or worked with the collection in whole or part include --

WMM = W. Max Mueller, purchaser and first organizer [1910-1911]

B.G. = Battiscomb Gunn [1932 more or less]

Nathaniel Julius Reich [Dropsie College, Egyptologist]

GDV or DV = Giorgio DellaVida, who catalogued most of the Arabic materials around 1950 [published posthumously 1981]

J. de Menasce obtained photos of several Pahlavi pieces for his 1957 publication in Corpus Inscriptionum Iranicarum 3.4-5, subsequently edited by Dieter Weber (1992)

A. E. Samuel of Yale [1961]

RAK = Robert A. Kraft [from 1966 onwards, with various assistants]

John Shumaker [1971; was a Penn student]

Gregg Schwendner [November 1988, now at Wichita]

Todd Hickey [former Penn student, now at Berkeley]

Jennifer Houser Wegner [Egyptology caretaker, 1990s onward]

JW = Jean Walker [Egyptology staff, in-house photography]

LCK = Leslie Caroline Kelly [2006, grad student]

Fandl = Allison Fandl [2006, work-study student]

Ideal summary information on each piece in this listing would include
